With resources used for the purpose of education there is a defined function. The desire is to maximize functionality and reduce barriers to accessing critical information. A practical hierarchal structure offers clear guideline on how the print resource is to be used. Design in practical terms is not about demonstrating how creative you are, it’s about packaging information that follows a logical flow. This brings into play good design principles that assist to divine a layout that best serves the needs of the user. Creativity becomes the tool a the designer uses to maximize efficiency and inject visual purpose.
The final product is designed to serve a specific audience, and it should communicate this. With educational resources, the range varies from early childhood to young adult. Withing that group there are four to five stages of expectation where visual style has to be addressed. The cover illustration and the design within the book reflect a style that is appealing to early high school students.
